Men's Basketball Extends Streak to Five At California (Pa.)

California, Pa—The men's basketball team extends its win streak to five making it their largest win streak of the season after a victory on the road against California (Pa.).
The Lakers had four players scoring in double-digits including Jason Massey who led the MU with 24 points followed by Nick Lang (12) with Maxwell and Pratapas scoring 11 each. Edvaldo Ferreira led the Lakers with 11 rebounds, respectively.

For California, Brent Pegram had team high 16 points with Zyan Collins being the only other Vulcan to score in double-digits with 10.

In the first half, with under 15 minutes to go, Jason Massey would make a layup which would turn into a 6-0 run for the Lakers going up 16-4. Under the halfway point of the first half, Massey would make another layup starting an 8-0 run giving the Lakers their largest lead of the half (19) 30-11. With under three now to go in the half, the Vulcans would cut the deficit back to 18 before Malik Jones would hit a three pointer starting another 6-0 to send MU into the half leading 46-20. Mercyhurst shot 50 percent from the field (17-34) and 55.6 percent from beyond the arc (10-18) while California shot 25 percent (5-20).

Early in the second, Mercyhurst would get on another run (11-0) with Massey scoring five of the eleven points putting the Lakers up 59-23. The Vulcans would try to get some momentum right before the halfway point by going on an 8-0 run of their own making the score 65-35. The Lakers would go on one more final big run (7-0) before many other small runs to eventually close out the game 90-55. In the second half, the Lakers shot 54.8 while CAL U shot a low 32.1 percent. MU also out rebounded CAL U 39-32 in the game.

The Lakers will travel on the road to Edinboro on January 30th for their next game as they take on the Fighting Scots.
