ERIE, Pa. --
Jason Massey scored 15 points and earned the Game Changer Award as the Mercyhurst men's basketball team defeated cross-town rival Gannon, 51-35, in a Porreco Pride of Erie matchup at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center on Wednesday. The game, which was sponsored by Bianchi Honda, was also a PSAC contest.
Edvaldo Ferreira added 10 points and
Patrick Smith hauled down 12 rebounds for the Lakers (11-4, 6-4).
Daryl Porter was the leading scorer for Gannon (7-10, 5-6) with eight points. Kevin Dodds grabbed 10 rebounds.
Mercyhurst led for much of the contest, charging out to a 22-7 lead in the first half before taking a 24-15 advantage into intermission. The Lakers held the visiting Golden Knights to 19.2-percent shooting in the first half, including 1 of 8 from three-point land.
The Knights closed their deficit to 24-19, but that was as close as they came in the second half. The Lakers' largest lead was forged in the final score as they closed the game on a 7-0 run.
Mercyhurst outrebounded GU, 42-33, and shot 20-for-53 from the field (37.7 percent) and 7-for-22 from three-point territory (31.8) while holding Gannon to 12-for-50 (24.0) and 2-for-13 (15.4), respectively.
The Lakers will return to action on Saturday with a 3 p.m. PSAC contest at California (Pa.).
