Women's Basketball Earns Tight Win On the Road


CLARION, Pa.—The Mercyhurst won a tight contest against PSAC opponent Clarion by a score of 62-60 on Saturday.

Amber Renz was the leading scorer for the Lakers dropping 22 points and also led the team in rebounds with six. Eliza Oswalt was another key contributor to the Lakers win also scoring in double-digits with 14 while Nicolete Newman had five steals for MU with Emily Shopene's six assists, respectively.

Clarion's own Yasmin Lewis had team high 21 points in the contest today.

In the first quarter, the Golden Eagles (7-8, 1-7) jumped out early on going on a 7-0 making the score 16-9 before Renz closed the run with a layup with less than a minute to go in the first quarter. Clarion would go in the second up five.

Heading into the second, the Lakers went on a 7-0 run of their own as well to eventually tie the game with Shopene's three-pointer.  The lead would then be exchanged six times by both teams before Lauren Lapertosa would give Mercyhurst (7-8, 4-4) the lead 31-29 going into halftime.

In the third, Clarion would then retake the lead and extend it out to as many as six before the Lakers came rumbling back and eventually gain the lead back with Oswalt's two free-throws to close out the quarter 45-43. 

In the final quarter, the Lakers would tie their largest lead of the game (7) with a layup by Renz early in the quarter. The Golden Eagles would claw their way back but it wouldn't be enough giving MU their seventh win of the season and fourth win of the conference 62-60.

Clarion- 42.4%

The Lakers will be on the road their next game as the travel to Seton Hill to take on the Griffins.
