INDIANA, Pa. --
Shelby Chesko and
Katie Baird totaled 10 kills apiece to guide the Mercyhurst volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over PSAC opponent Indiana (Pa.) on Friday. The Lakers won with set scores of 25-22, 25-23, 25-21.
Baird also had 11 digs while
Tess Ganich contributed nine kills.
Claire Kenny and
Mary Marusza made 22 and 21 assists, respectively.
Hannah Vuylsteke had 12 digs and Baird added 11.
Jessica Ignace had 10 kills to lead IUP (6-12, 2-3). Dominica Niccolai finished with 31 assists.
Each of the first two sets went to 19-19 ties before Mercyhurst pulled away with late-set runs.
During the first, a kill by
Leah Kern broke a 19-all knot and began a 3-0 MU run.
Alyssa Zirnheld and Chesko added blocks as the Lakers built a 22-19 advantage and held on to take a 1-0 match lead.
In the second, Kern and Ganich provided kills to break that 19-19 tie. Once again, Mercyhurst enjoyed a 3-0 stretch and used that gap to hold on and win the set.
The Lakers did not wait to take command in the third. They snapped a 4-4 tie with an 8-2 run and held the lead for good.
Alyssa Kling had two kills and one block during that stretch while Chesko contributed two kills.
Mercyhurst will return to action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. PSAC contest at Clarion.
