Volleyball Falls At Clarion To Finish Weekend With Split

CLARION, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst volleyball team suffered a 3-1 loss to PSAC opponent Clarion on Saturday. The Lakers lost by set scores of 22-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-19.

Shelby Chesko led the Laker offense with 17 kills while Alyssa Zirnheld compiled 14 kills and 13 digs. Also, Claire Kenny made 26 assists, Mary Marusza had 16 assists and Hannah Vulsteke totaled 19 digs.

Clarion (13-6, 4-2) was led by Julia Holden, who had 17 kills. Leah Vensen finished with 45 assists.

The Lakers battled back for a victory in the first set after trailing, 15-11. At that point, MU went on an 9-1 run -- led by Zirnheld's three kills and one ace. The visitors held their lead the rest of the set to take a 1-0 match lead.

Mercyhurst jumped out to a 5-1 advantage in the second set and never trailed until a late 5-0 set-closing run by Clarion evened the match at 1-1. The Lakers had led 23-20 before the Golden Eagles made their push.

Clarion ended the third set with another five-point run and then used a 4-0 streak to take the lead for good in the fourth.

The Lakers (8-11, 3-3) will return to action on Tuesday with a 7:05 p.m. PSAC contest against cross-town rival Gannon.
