ERIE, Pa. --
Katie Baird totaled 19 kills and 10 digs as the Mercyhurst volleyball team outlasted Millersville for a 3-2 victory in PSAC action on Saturday in the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
Shelby Chesko added 13 kills while
Claire Kenny and
Mary Marusza finished with 26 assists each as MU won with set scores of 25-20, 18-25, 17-25, 25-19, 15-10.
Hannah Vuylsteke made 24 digs.
Leah Kern and
Beth Brady had five and four total blocks, respectively.
Jayci Suseland led the Millersville attach with 19 kills. Katie Laughman had 42 assists and Kat Forry made 25 digs.
Trailing 10-4 in the opening set, the Lakers went on a 9-1 run, which was led by
Alyssa Kling's two kills and two total blocks. The run was part of a 14-4 stretch that sent Mercyhurst into the lead and helped it to a 1-0 match lead.
The visiting Marauders (7-6, 2-2) never trailed in the second or third sets, taking a 2-1 lead of their own.
In the fourth, Mercyhurst opened with nine straight points behind the service of Baird, who had two aces. Chesko managed two kills and one total block while Kern had a kill and two total blocks during the streak. MU held on to force the fifth set.
The Lakers (7-10, 2-2) never trailed in the fifth. Baird had five kills in the decisive set.
Mercyhurst will return to competition on Friday and Saturday with PSAC matches against Indiana (Pa.) and Clarion.
