Football Celebrates Homecoming With Win Over Bloomsburg

ERIE, Pa. -- Quarterback Doug Altavilla threw for one touchdown and ran in the game-winner as the Mercyhurst football team defeated Bloomsburg, 14-10, for a victory on Homecoming weekend at Tullio Field. The contest was a PSAC crossover game.

Altavilla completed 17 of 28 passes for 146 yards and the one score. Running back Garrett Owens was a key cog in the offense, gaining 99 yards on offense. Owens had 15 carries for 87 yards and five receptions for 12.

The Laker defense recorded eight tackles-for-loss. Defensive backs Dante Rodriguez and Henry Caldwell and linebackers Rocky Owens and Chris Peluso were credited with seven total tackles apiece. Defensive back Jake Tarasovitch finished with six tackles, including one sack.

Mercyhurst trailed for much of the second half before a 77-yard punt return by running back Cortez Watson got the Lakers down to the Bloomsburg 3-yard-line late in the fourth quarter. Altavilla scored the go-ahead TD on a 1-yard run with 2:16 remaining.

On Bloomsburg's final drive, the Lakers held on fourth down as defensive back Dante' Redwood made the game-clinching pass breakup.

The visiting Huskies (1-2) took the lead on a Jacob Sattamini field goal in the second quarter before Mercyhurst eventually answered on a 19-yard touchdown hookup from Altavilla to wide receiver Austin Hence. Owens had set up that go-ahead touchdown with a 41-yard run down to the BU 19.

The Huskies took the lead before halftime on a 36-yard touchdown run by running back Alex Gooden and held their 10-7 advantage until Altavilla's TD.

Gooden had 16 carries for 99 yards for BU.

The Lakers will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 22, with a visit to third-ranked Indiana (Pa.)
