SPARTANBURG, S.C. --
Leah Rogers tallied two goals and one assist as the Mercyhurst field hockey team opened the 2018 season with a 3-1 non-conference victory over Converse on Saturday.
Clare Ahern scored the other Laker goal and also made an assist.
Katelyn Smith had an assist and
Victoria Triaga was the winning goalie.
Ahern and Rogers scored one minute and seven seconds apart in the second half to break a 1-1 tie. Ahern had her goal in the 58th minute, receiving an assist from Rogers. Rogers then put in an insurance goal in the 58th with assistance from Rogers.
Rogers had scored MU's first goal of the season in the 19th minute. She received an assist from Smith.
The Valkyries answered back in the 25th when Marina Montes-Nino tied the contest at 1-all -- a tie that carried into halftime before Mercyhurst won the contest in the second half.
Mercyhurst outshot Converse, 23-2, and held a 13-0 edge in corners.
The Lakers will return to action on Sunday with a 1 p.m. contest at non-conference Newberry.
