Henri Tophoven and
Hady Sarr scored goals while winning goaltender
Martin Jarc notched a shutout as the Mercyhurst men's soccer team opened the 2018 season with a 2-0 victory over non-conference opponent Northern Michigan on Thursday.
Tophoven scored in the 22nd minute, receiving assists from
Connor Wilkinson and
Julio Betar. Sarr tacked on an insurance goal in the 61st.
In goal, Jarc stopped three shots to preserve the clean sheet.
Brayden Wilinski had two saves for Northern Michigan (0-1).
Northern Michigan outshot the Lakers, 10-7, and held a 12-1 edge in corner kicks.
Mercyhurst (1-0) will return to action on Sunday when it visits non-conference Notre Dame (Ohio) for a 1 p.m start.
