JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The Mercyhurst baseball fell 6-2 in ten innings to Millersville in its second game of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship Tournament Friday at Point Stadium.
The loss puts the Lakers (32-12) in an elimination game against Shippensburg to be played later this evening. First pitch is tentatively scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Millersville improves to 33-17.
The first six innings of the game featured perhaps the best pitching duel of the tournament to that point. Mercyhurst's
Tyler Garbee and Millersville Eli Nabholz each threw six scoreless frames to begin the game. They combined to allow just five hits over those six full innings.
Millersville, the away team, managed to break through with the game's first run. It came on a safety squeeze by Ted Williams to put the Marauders up 1-0.
The Lakers responded in a big way in the bottom half after a leadoff single by
Jack Elliott. Mercyhurst took the on a two-run home run to left-center field by
Michael Montalbano in the next at bat, his second home run of the season.
Garbee exited after seven efficient innings where he allowed only three hits and one run. He walked four and struck out two over 97 pitches.
After a scoreless eighth inning by
Nicholas McRandal, the Lakers had a chance to add insurance runs in the bottom half with runners on second and third with nobody out but failed to break through.
McRandal recorded the first out of the ninth before
Adam Jeannette entered the game with runners on first and third. After a walk to load the bases Jeannette forced a ground ball to third where
Jack Elliott threw home to get the force.
Drew Delsignore threw to first to try and double up the batter to end the game, but the ball glanced off the runner's back and scooted away, allowing the run from second to score and tie the game.
Millersville held the Lakers scoreless in the bottom half before sending ten to the plate in the tenth and scoring four runs to take 6-2 lead the Marauders held through the final out in the bottom of the tenth.
Jack Elliott and Drew Designore each had two hits to lead the Lakers.
Jimmy Standohar reached base three times in five plate appearances.
