JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The Mercyhurst baseball team had its 2018 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship run cut short after losing 10-5 to Shippensburg Friday evening at Point Stadium.
The loss eliminates the Lakers (32-13) from the tournament. Mercyhurst now awaits a decision from the NCAA regarding its potential placement in the NCAA Atlantic Regional Tournament.
Shippensburg (28-23) plated two runs in the first inning on back-to-back RBI hits, but the Lakers managed to get one back on
Matthew Gibson's run-scoring single to right field in the second.
The Raiders delivered the next blow with four runs in the fourth inning, including an inside-the-park home run by Cash Gladfelter.
Drew Delsignore added an RBI-double in the top of the fifth to pull the game to 6-1, but Shippensburg had another answer with two more runs in the fifth, which chased Mercyhurst starter
Connor Ryan from the game after 4.1 innings.
Mercyhurst pulled together a two-out rally in the seventh inning to force Shippensburg to pull its starter Andy Crum after 6.2 innings. Delsignore reached on an error and scored
Jimmy Standohar, followed by an RBI-double from
Daniel Elliott and another run scoring single from
Michael Montalbano to pull the Lakers within three with two and a half innings to play.
Shippensburg once again came up with a response and scored two more runs in the bottom half of the seventh to kill the Lakers' momentum and closed the final two innings to win 10-5.
Ryan was charged with his second loss of the season. Eight of the nine Lakers' batters recorded at least one hit, with Standohar and Dan Elliott collecting two each.
