Bats Power #8 Baseball To Doubleheader Sweep

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The eighth-ranked Mercyhurst baseball team battled for two wins in its Sunday doubleheader at Seton Hill in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action.

Mercyhurst put up ten runs in game one to win by three and held on to win 5-4 in game two.

The Lakers (19-5) improved to 10-2 in PSAC play while the Griffins (10-16) dropped to 5-7.

Recaps to both games are listed below:

Mercyhurst 10, Seton Hill 7
The Lakers put up double digit runs for the first time since March 24 and wound up winning 10-7.

Mercyhurst did most of its damage in the third and fourth innings when the Lakers put up back-to-back threes on the scoreboard.

Trailing 2-1 in the top of the third, Daniel Elliott launched a three-run home run to take the lead. The home run was his fifth of the season.

In the top of the fourth, Alex O'Donnell singled to right and a two-base error allowed Jared Kapturasky to score from first on the play. Drew Delsignore drove in O'Donnell the next at-bat on another Griffins' error. Elliott completed the scoring with another RBI hit to score Delsignore.

Starting pitcher Tyler Garbee was effective over 5.1 innings. He struck out seven hitters while allowing two earned runs and six hits. He only walked one batter and threw 105 pitches.

Mercyhurst tacked on three insurance runs in the top of the sixth and seventh innings that proved to be clutch in the end. Delsignore drove in Jimmy Standohar on his double in the sixth. Zach Mitchell and Jack Elliott took advantage of two wild pitches in the seventh to score from third.

Seton Hill made things interesting the bottom of the seventh when they tacked on four runs to shrink what was a 10-3 deficit. Adam Jeannette, who relieved Garbee in the sixth, managed to work his way out of the jam to close out the game.

Mercyhurst collected 11 hits in the game, more than it had in both of Friday's games combined. Standohar had three hits in five at-bats at the top of the order. Mercyhurst's batters one-through-eight in the lineup collected at least one hit each.

Mercyhurst 5, Seton Hill 4
Seton Hill gave the Lakers all they could handle in another furious charge in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Lakers hung on to win by one to complete the day's sweep.

The Lakers went into the final half inning leading 5-2 and had two outs recorded, but the Griffins managed to score twice and load the bases with the potential game-winning run on second base.

Hunter Treece, who had entered mid-inning and recorded the first two outs, forced a ground out to Alex O'Donnell allowing the Lakers to hang on.

Daniel Elliott, Jimmy Standohar, and O'Donnell set the tone offensively once again for the Lakers. They combined for four hits, four runs batted in, and two runs scored.

Elliott had RBI-knocks in the first and third innings and was the lone Laker with multiple hits (2). O'Donnell had an RBI-double in the fifth and brought home another run after reaching on an error in the seventh.

Standohar had a bloop-single in the seventh to bring in another run.

Mercyhurst's starting pitcher was Matthew Minnick, who threw in his first game this season and pitched for the first time since exactly one year ago after an injury cut short his 2017 season.

Minnick threw 39 pitches over three scoreless innings and allowed just one hit. He hit two batters and struck out four.

Mercyhurst's first reliever Nicholas McRandal earned the win (2-0) after throwing the fourth inning. Connor Ryan pitched the fifth, sixth, and into the seventh before Treece entered to earn his second save.

Mercyhurst's next scheduled game is Tuesday, April 10 in a nine-inning, non-conference game at home against Notre Dame College. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
