ERIE, Pa. – The eighth-ranked Mercyhurst baseball team scored six runs in the final two innings and walked-off winners on a
Collin Fantaskey winner to come out on top 9-8 in Tuesday's non-conference game against Notre Dame College at Mercyhurst Baseball Field.
The Lakers (20-5) have now won their last four non-conference games and 14 of their last 16 overall.
Notre Dame drops to 9-22 on the season.
Mercyhurst trailed by six (7-1) after NDC scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning before the Lakers began their comeback.
Matthew Schneider roped a two-RBI single to center field in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit to four.
The Lakers clutched up in the eighth inning still trailing by four thanks to a
Parker Shannon two-run blast to left center field and a two-RBI
Drew Delsignore single. Shannon's home run was the first of his collegiate career and he completed his first start with three hits in five at-bats
NDC retook the lead in the top of the ninth scoring from third on a wild pitch, but Mercyhurst wouldn't be denied in the bottom half.
With the bases loaded and one out, late-game substitution Kenny Robinson singled through the right side of the infield to bring home one run and knot the game at eight.
Robinson's hit was followed by Fantaskey's game-winning base knock through the left side to cap a three-hit game for the senior outfielder.
Mercyhurst used a pitcher-by-committee approach for the game with six players taking the mound. Its most effective pitchers for the game were
Vincenzo Lucente,
Connor Ryan, and
Josh Greggs.
Lucente needed just ten pitches to retire the side in the sixth inning with two strikeouts. Ryan threw two scoreless frames in the seventh and eighth innings with only two hits allowed.
Greggs won his first game of the season (1-0) despite allowed the NDC go-ahead run in the ninth.
The walk-off win was the first for Mercyhurst since March 23
rd when Matt Gibson knocked in the game-winning run against California (Pa.) in a 1-0 victory.
Mercyhurst returns to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action this weekend with two doubleheaders against Slippery Rock April 13-14. The Lakers travel to Slippery Rock Friday before hosting on Saturday.
