Vallimont Throws Third-Straight Gem As #8 Baseball Splits Pair With Seton Hill

ERIE, Pa. – The eighth-ranked Mercyhurst baseball team split its first doubleheader of its regular season Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Division series against Seton Hill Friday afternoon at Mercyhurst Baseball Field.

The Lakers (17-5, 8-2 PSAC) won another pitcher's duel powered by another lights-out performance by Chris Vallimont in game one before dropping to the Griffins (10-15, 5-5 PSAC) by five in game two.

Recaps to both games are listed below:

Mercyhurst 1, Seton Hill 0

Chris Vallimont continued his stellar pitching streak with another shutout performance over 6.2 innings to down Seton Hill 1-0 in game one.

Vallimont struck out 14 hitters while allowing just three base hits, two walks, and one hit batter. The win was his third straight and he now owns a 5-1 record.

Vallimont has now struck out 44 hitters over his last three starts and leads all of Division II baseball with a K/9 inning rate of 17.64.

Adam Jeannette picked up his third save after entering with two outs and a two-balls, one-strike count to the current Griffins' hitter. After walking the first batter, Jeanette forced a ground out to the next hitter to end the game.

Mercyhurst's offense managed only two hits in game one, but one drove in the lone run the Lakers needed to come out on top.

In the bottom of the fourth, Jared Kapturasky singled to left field with Jack Elliott on second base. Elliott scored due to an errant throw from the Seton Hill leftfielder for the game's lone run.

Kapturasky reach base in all three of his plate appearances with the run-producing single and two walks.

Seton Hill 6, Mercyhurst 1

The Lakers' bats went cold in the second game of the doubleheader in a five-run loss.

Mercyhurst scored its only run in the seventh inning on a pinch-hit RBI single by Michael Montalbano which drove in late-game substitution Kenny Robinson from third.

The Lakers struggled against Griffins' starting pitcher Perry DellaValle, who completed six innings and allowed only three hits. He also struck out 11 batters and walked three.

Mercyhurst starter Russell Lamovec matched DellaValle by putting up zeroes through three innings, but back-to-back doubles by the Griffins in fourth gave them a lead they wouldn't give up.

Lamovec exited the game innings after five solid innings in which he allowed just one run, four hits, and two walks. He also fanned six Griffins and forced one double play.

Seton Hill tacked on two more runs in sixth inning and three more in the seventh for added insurance. Mercyhurst reliever Ryan Smerkar was charged with his first loss of the season and is now 4-1 on the year.

Mercyhurst and Seton Hill will play two in Greensburg, Pa. tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m.
