#19 Men's Lacrosse Rides Early Lead To Win Over Wheeling

ERIE, Pa. -- Oran Horn had a six-point day, totaling four points and two assists, as the 19th-ranked Mercyhurst men's lacrosse team took a 17-9 victory against Great Midwest Athletic Conference opponent Wheeling Jesuit on Saturday.

Nathan Grenon added three goals while Sam Crusha and Austin Robare finished with two goals and one assist each for the Lakers (8-4, 4-2). 

Also for MU, Colin Greenway, Dom Perna, Devin Pipher, Patrick Liddy, Dan Kritkausky and Nicholas Bartone had goals. Greenway, Pipher, Bartone and James Rettinger made assists.

Greg Weyl led the defense with four groundballs and three caused turnovers. Pipher picked up four GBs, also, while Evan Schumacher went 21 of 30 in the faceoff circle and picked up 13 GBs.

The Lakers sped out to a 4-0 lead in the first 4:17 of the contest and, later, built an 8-2 lead. The visiting Cardinals (5-8, 3-3) closed their deficit to 13-8 in the third quarter, but that was as close as they got.

Dereck Downs was WJU's leading scorer with two goals and one assist. Scotty Gwyn had six groundballs and three caused turnovers in support of goalie Jake Lilly, who had 10 saves.

Mercyhurst will return to action on Saturday, Apr. 28, with a 3 p.m. G-MAC matchup against Ohio Valley.
