WASHINGTON, Pa. – The eight-ranked Mercyhurst baseball team initiated an offensive onslaught to win a non-conference game 21-9 over Penn State Greater Allegheny Sunday afternoon at Wild Things Park.
Mercyhurst's 21 runs in a game are the most since the Lakers put up 22 against PSUGA last season on April 4.
The Lakers' lineup had 12 different players drive in at least one run and 13 cross the plate at least once.
Matt Schneider had a big day at the dish going 2-for-2 with an inside-the-park home run, a triple, four RBI, and two walks.
Six other Lakers had multi-hit games, including starters
Drew Delsignore,
Alex O'Donnell,
Dominic Cecere, and
Collin Fantaskey along with substitutes
Josh Surowiec and
Jack Elliott.
The Lakers had eleven extra-base hits in total: five doubles, five triples, and Schneider's round-tripper.
Mercyhurst (5-0) rolled out eight pitchers with
Jared Kapturasky throwing a scoreless inning to start the game.
Vincenzo Lucente followed with scoreless frames in the second and third innings.
The Lakers migrate south for the next five games when they head to Wilson, N.C. March 8-11. Mercyhurst will play non-conference opponents Barton and West Virginia State (DH) before taking on Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division opponents Kutztown and Lock Haven.
