WILSON, N.C. – The Mercyhurst baseball team started its five-game North Carolina road trip with a 9-7 victory over Barton College Thursday afternoon.
The Lakers (6-0) never trailed in the nine-inning game and used four different pitchers to come out on top.
Daniel Elliott extended his season-long hit streak to six games with his second home run of the season. He finished the day 2-for-4 with 3 RBI.
Matt Schneider also brought a big bat with a home run and two RBI.
Drew Delsignore roped three hits and scored twice.
Mercyhurst scored five runs in the first inning, including Schneider's two-run dinger.
Barton (7-15) pulled back within one with three runs in the third and another in the fourth, but
Collin Fantaskey added an RBI single in the top of the fifth, followed by a sacrifice fly from
Jimmy Standohar the next at-bat.
The Bulldogs countered with a solo home run in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 7-5, but Elliott's two-run bomb in the top of the seventh provided enough insurance for the Lakers to win.
Tyler Garbee threw the opening three innings for the Lakers, allowing three runs on four hits.
He was relieved by
Nicholas McRandal who also threw three innings while giving up three hits and two runs.
Ryan Smerkar was awarded the win after throwing the seventh and eighth frames.
