Charbonneau Scores OT Goal, Surpasses 100-Point Mark As Men's Ice Hockey Completes Sweep

ERIE, Pa. -- Jonathan Charbonneau scored two goals, including a power-play tally in overtime, and eclipsed the 100-career-point mark as the Mercyhurst men's ice hockey team defeated Sacred Heart, 3-2, to sweep the Atlantic Hockey quarterfinal series on Saturday at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.

Charbonneau also had an assist. Tomasso Bucci had the Lakers' other goal.

Joseph Duszak had three assists while Patrick Piacentini and Joshua Lammon tallied one assist each for Mercyhurst (21-11-4).

Austin Mcllmurray and Stephen Hladin scored for Sacred Heart (13-22-4).

Charbonneau's winner came 9:39 into the extra period. The Lakers had killed off a penalty of their own before gaining a man-advantage.

On the play, Piacentini pinched up on the right wing and slid the puck back to Duszak at the point. Duszak then passed over to Charbonneau, who one-timed the puck into the back of the net.

Charbonneau had evened the score at 2-all earlier in the game after the Lakers fell behind 2-0. His goal came 44 seconds after Bucci got Mercyhurst on the board during the second period.

Bucci found himself wide open in front of the SHU net on his goal. Charbonneau began the play and slid the puck across ice to Duszak, who skated it toward the net, and found Bucci for the the tap-in.

With the helper, Charbonneau became the 23rd Division I era Laker to achieve 100 points, joining teammates Derek Barach and Jack Riley, who hit the mark earlier this season.

The 2-1 score did not last long as Charbonneau evened the score. Lammon won a faceoff and sent the puck back to Duszak at the point. Duszak took a shot that was rebounded and put in by Charbonneau.

Sacred Heart had staked itself a 2-0 lead, scoring once in the first period and once in the second.

During the first period, Mcllmurray scored on the power play to give Sacred Heart an early 1-0 lead. Zach Tsekos and Josh Allan had assists.

Two minutes and forty-two seconds into the second period, the Pioneers extended their lead to 2-0 with a goal from Hladin. Jackson Barliant and Jason Cotton tallied assists.

That ended the scoring for the visitors as the host Lakers came back with three unanswerd goals.

The Lakers went 1-for-5 on the power play while the Pioneers finished 1-for-3.

Brandon Wildung made 35 saves in net for Mercyhurst while Brett Magnus stopped 43 shots for Sacred Heart.

The Lakers will return to action on Friday, Mar. 16, when they participate in the Atlantic Hockey Tournament semifinals at Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, N.Y. An opponent has not yet been determined.
