Women's Ice Hockey Skates To Draw With PSU

ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's ice hockey team got a goal from Maggie Knott in its 1-1 tie Friday afternoon versus Penn State at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.

The tie is the third of the season for Mercyhurst (13-13-3) and the second against Penn State this season (Nov. 4). The Nittany Lions increased their nation-leading tie total to ten (6-13-10).

Offense was tough to come by with both teams making it difficult for the other to generate quality scoring chances. Penn State found a crack in the Mercyhurst defense at 7:25 in the first period for the game's first score by Irene Kiroplis, her first of the season.

Mercyhurst bounced back late in the second period thanks to Knott's tenth of the season at 17:07. Knott scored off her own rebound with assists to Brooke Hartwick and Samantha Fieseler.

Both teams produced nine total shots on goal in the scoreless third period and went a combined 0-for-3 on the power play in the frame to send the game to overtime.

In overtime, Mercyhurst had six shots to PSU's two. Five of the Lakers' shots came on a power play at 3:17 that lasted until the game clock hit zero. Mercyhurst's power play finished the game 0-for-3 with eight shots on goal while the Lakers' penalty kill stopped all five Nittany Lion power plays on six shots on goal.

Kennedy Blair earned her first draw of the season (6-6-1) after stopping 17-of-18 PSU shots.

The Lakers square off with Penn State tomorrow to complete the regular season series at 3 p.m. at Mercyhurst Ice Center.
