ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's ice hockey team tied Penn State for the second-straight game in a 3-3 draw Saturday afternoon at Mercyhurst Ice Center.
Brooke Hartwick,
Callie Paddock, and
Sam Isbell scored the three Mercyhurst (13-13-4) goals.
Alexa Vasko,
Summer-Rae Dobson,
Sarah Hine, and
Morgan Stacey tallied an assist each.
Hartwick's unassisted scored at 11:13 in the first period started the game's scoring. The goal was Hartwick's tenth of the season and marks the third-straight season she's scored double-digit goals in a season.
Paddock followed Hartwick's score with Mercyhurst's second at 18:35 in the period to take a two-goal lead into the second period. The goal was Paddock's third of the season.
After a pair of Laker penalties late in the second period, Penn State (6-13-11) responded on a five-on-three power play at 16:13 off the stick of Natalie Heising to make it 2-1.
Mercyhurst jumped back in front by two with 17 seconds remaining in the second on Isbell's fifth of the season, but Penn State's Bella Sutton scored the final goal of the period with 1.6 seconds remaining, bringing the score to 3-2 entering the third.
The Lakers held on to the one-goal lead until Penn State scored with an extra skater late in the frame. Heising netted her second of the game with 16 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.
In overtime, Mercyhurst had a power-play opportunity cut short by a penalty of its own.
Sarah McDonnell shut the door on PSU's abbreviated man-advantage, making two key saves to preserve the tie. She had 28 saves for the game.
The Lakers now hold a 10-3-3 record in College Hockey America and now sit two points behind Robert Morris for the top position in the conference. The Lakers host the Colonials next weekend, Feb. 16-17, at Mercyhurst Ice Center. Friday's puck drop will be at 7 p.m. with Saturday's game slated for 2 p.m.
