ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Mercyhurst women's ice hockey team had three different goal scorers and another shutout from freshman goaltender Kennedy Blair in a 3-0 win against RIT Friday afternoon at the Gene Polisseni Center.
Linemates Sarah Hine and Vilma Tanskanen had two points each with a goal and assist. Sam Isbell picked up the other score for the Lakers.
The win for Mercyhurst (15-14-4) improves the Lakers to 12-4-3 in College Hockey America (CHA) and gives them 27 points. RIT (4-26-3) drops to 1-18 in the CHA.
Blair's shutout is her fourth of the season and improves her record to 8-7-1 this season. Blair now owns a 1.52 goals-against average in 18 appearances this season, good for 5
th in Division I women's ice hockey.
In a scoreless first period, Mercyhurst narrowly edged RIT in shots on goal 8-6. The Lakers made their move in the second period starting with Isbell's sixth of the season at 11:33. Her goal was assisted by Samantha Fieseler (10) and Morgan Stacey (8).
Hine followed up a little over three minutes later with her third of the season just after the Lakers killed an RIT power play. Tanskanen (8) and Jennifer MacAskill (4) tallied the assists.
In the third period, the Lakers found themselves shorthanded once again, but Tanskanen broke through and scored her second short-handed goal of the season at 9:14. Tanskanen's team-leading 14
th goal was helped by Hine (13) and K.K. Thiessen (3).
The Lakers outshot the Tigers 32-15 in the last two periods and held RIT scoreless on four power plays. Mercyhurst's power play went 0-for-3.
Mercyhurst's point total now ties Robert Morris for the top spot in the CHA Standings. Mercyhurst has one game left to play in the regular season set for tomorrow at 1:05 against the Tigers.
