ASHLAND, Va. -- A goal by
Colin Greenway held as the game-winner as the 15th-ranked Mercyhurst men's lacrosse team claimed its first win of the season with a 6-5 decision over Wingate on Sunday. The non-conference game was held at neutral-site Randolph-Macon.
Devin Pipher had two goals while single goals were credited to Greenway,
Evan Schumacher,
Austin Robare and
Nathan Grenon.Â
Sam Crusha added an assist and five groundballs. Schumacher was 9 of 14 in the faceoff circle.
Winning goalie
Alec Starr finished with 13 saves and six GBs for Mercyhurst (1-1).
For Wingate (1-1), Bobby Padden had one goal and one assist while single goals were scored by Alex Llerandi, Gary Pierpont, Conor Gronbach and Seth Grimwood.
Wingate goalie Jacob Ormerod had four saves.
The Bulldogs took the lead with two first-quarter goals before the Lakers stormed back with five straight -- two in the first and three in the second.
Wingate then answered with two more scores before halftime and then another goal in the third to even the score at 5-5.
That set the stage for Greenway's game-winning goal with 10:50 remaining in the third quarter.
Mercyhurst will return to action on Saturday when it takes on Saint Rose at neutral-size Nazareth.
