Men's Ice Hockey's Unbeaten Streak Snapped In OT Loss To RIT

ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst men's ice hockey team suffered a 6-5 overtime loss to the Rochester Institute of Technology during Atlantic Hockey play on Monday at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. The loss snapped the Lakers' nine-game unbeaten streak.

Jonathan Charbonneau scored two goals and added an assist while Joseph Duszak recorded a goal and an assist. Joshua Lammon and Taylor Best also had goals for the Lakers.

Bryan Sienerth, Jack Riley, Patrick Piacentini and Les Lancaster added assists for Mercyhurst (15-11-4, 12-8-4).

Erik Brown scored three goals, Alden Dupius recorded two goals and Jordan Peacock had one goal for RIT (13-15-2, 12-11-1).

Dupuis scored the game-winner 1:59 into overtime after Charbonneau tied the contest at 5-all with 12 seconds remaining in the game.

RIT had opened the scoring just 1:31 into the first period as Brown scored with assistance from Abbott Girduckis and Dan Willett.

Peacock gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead with a power play goal assisted by Matt Abt and Girduckis.

A little over two minutes later, Lammon scored his seventh goal of the season to cut the Tiger lead in half. RIT tried to clear the puck out of its zone, but Charbonneau stole it and passed it up to Lammon, who scored from an angle on the red line.

Dupuis quickly responded with a RIT's third goal of the game. Bryson Traptow and Peacock picked up assists.

Duszak pulled the Lakers within 3-2 with his sixth goal of the season. Sienerth took a shot that was deflected by Riley to the side of the net. Sienerth picked up the loose puck and passed it up to Duszak, who skated it and slapped it into the back of the net.

Forty-seven seconds in to the second period, Brown scored his second goal of the game to give RIT its two-goal lead back.

The Lakers eventually closed their margin to 4-3 late in the second as Charbonneau capitalized on the power play. Piacentini dished the puck over to Duszak, who took a shot that was rebounded toward Charbonneau, who one-timed the puck top shelf.

During third period, Best scored his 10th goal of the season to tie the game at 4-4. After a faceoff in RIT's zone, he forced a turnover and threaded a shot past Tiger goaltender Christian Short.

The 4-all tie was short-lived, however, as the Tigers converted a power-play goal just 2:55 late. Brown finished his hat trick with assists from Adam Brubacher and Myles Powell.

Mercyhurst pulled its goalie with 90 seconds remaining in regulation when Charbonneau scored his second goal of the game. Duszak slipped a pass back to Lancaster, whose blast from the point rebounded to Charbonneau.

During overtime, Dupuis pounced on a rebound to end the contest.

"We need to continue to do what we've been doing," said assistant coach Tom Upton. "It's obviously disappointing that we lost today, but we're just going to get back to the drawing board and brush this off as fast as we can."

The Lakers finished 1-for-4 on the power play while the Tigers went 2-for-3.

Wildung made six saves on nine shots before DeAugustine took over and saved 18 shots for Mercyhurst. Christian Short stopped 29 out of 34 shots for RIT.

The Lakers will return to action on Feb. 16-17 with a home-and-home series against Robert Morris. The teams will meet in Pittsburgh on Friday and then in Erie on Saturday.
