Box Score ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's hockey team scored twice on the power play and
Kennedy Blair earned her third shutout of the season in Mercyhurst's 2-0 win over #9 Robert Morris Friday evening at Mercyhurst Ice Center.
Mercyhurst (14-13-4) improves to 11-3-3 in College Hockey America (CHA) play while dropping RMU (17-7-4) to the same conference record. The Lakers currently hold the tiebreaker with a 2-1 head-to-head record over the Colonials.
Maggie Knott and
Samantha Fieseler both tallied two points on with a goal and assist each for the Lakers. The shutout is the second blanking of RMU by Blair and the Lakers this season (1-0, Dec. 1).
In the scoreless first period, Robert Morris came up empty on two power plays but did manage to maintain the majority of puck possession in the frame outshooting the Lakers 7-2.
In the second period, the Lakers got their first chance on the power play and capitalized when Knott swooped down the middle of the ice and picked the bottom corner on her shot at 7:38. The goal was her 11
th of the season and fourth on the power-play. Fieseler picked up the primary assist with Blair earning her first career point on the secondary helper.
The Lakers proceeded to pepper RMU goalie Elijah Milne-Price with 12 shots in the second compared to just three by the Colonials. Mercyhurst continued its momentum into the third period, scoring on its next power play when Fieseler's shot from the left point pinballed its way into the net at 9:04. Fieseler's fourth of the season was assisted by
Brooke Hartwick and Knott.
Robert Morris earned another power play chance down 2-0 with 3:36 remaining, but the Lakers neutralized the threat again and held the CHA's top power-play unit scoreless on four tries with just two shots on goal.
Both teams square off again tomorrow with the chance to take the outright lead in the CHA standings at 2 p.m. at Mercyhurst Ice Center.
