Late Seton Hill Push Sinks Women's Hoops

ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's basketball team fell 65-59 to Seton Hill in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action on Saturday.

Lauren Lapertosa led Mercyhurst (9-15, 7-11) with 12 points and eight rebounds while older sister Maria Lapertosa added 11 points and five rebounds.

Also for the Lakers, Emilee Norris ended with 12 rebounds and five blocks. Emily Shopene made seven assists.
 
Seton Hill (18-7, 13-6) was led by Jenna Kaufman who totaled 22 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Alexandra Hay had 16 points and Katie Nolan contributed 10 points.

After taking a 17-16 lead through the first quarter, the host Griffins (18-7, 13-6) went on a 13-2 run to start the second period and led by as many as 14. The Lakers eventually answered with an 8-0 run late in the second quarter, getting six points from Maria Lapertosa, which helped visiting MU close to a 38-31 halftime deficit.

Rachel Chessar hit a pair of game-tying three-pointers in the second half, tying the contest at 48-all with 1:11 in the third quarter and then again at 52-52 with 7:59 remaining in the fourth.

Shopene gave the Lakers their first lead of the second half, making a layup with 6:30 left. After four straight points by SHU, Norris pulled the Lakers even at 56-56 with a layup at the 4:31 mark before the Griffins took the lead for good on a three-pointer by Lindsey Mifsud.

Mercyhurst held an advantage at the glass, outrebounding Seton Hill, 40-36. The Lakers also outshot their host Griffins, going 25 of 56 from the field (44.6 percent) while SHU was 23 of 63 (36.5). The Griffins were 8 of 28 from three-point range (28.6) and MU was 4 of 15 (26.7).
 
The Lakers will return to action next on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at California (Pa.) in PSAC play.
