Barach Reaches Century Mark, Wildung Shines During 4-0 Win Over Holy Cross

ERIE, Pa. -- Derek Barach scored two goals and became the 21st player in Division I program history to record 100 points as the Mercyhurst men's ice hockey team defeated Holy Cross, 4-0, on Saturday at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. Barach is the sixth player to reach the century mark as a junior.

Jonathan Charbonneau also scored twice for the Lakers (15-10-4, 12-7-4) while goaltender Brandon Wildung made 34 saves to record his third shutout of the season.

Bryan Sienerth had two assists while single assists were recorded by Joshua Lammon, Patrick Piacentini, Joseph Duszak, Taylor Best and Zach Todd.

Thirty-one seconds into the game, Charbonneau put Mercyhurst ahead, 1-0, with a goal that served as the game-winner. Credit Lammon, whose shot through traffic was deflected by Charbonneau, with an assist.

During the second period, Barach put Mercyhurst up 2-0. Sienerth dropped the puck to Piacentini, who took a shot that was tipped in by Barach.

Later in the period, Wildung and the Lakers stood tall while killing off a five-minute major penalty. They carried that momentum toward a power-play goal as Charbonneau one-timed a pass from Best. Duszak also assisted the play.

Halfway through the third, Barach put home his second goal of the night, recording his 100th career point in the process. He tipped home another shot -- this one by Todd. Sienerth also had an assist on the goal.

The Lakers went 2-for-4 on the power play while the Crusaders (12-13-7, 11-9-6) went 0-for-5.

The visiting Crusaders held a 34-19 shot advantage. Their goalie, Paul Berrafato, finished with 15 saves.

"Holy Cross has always been a really good team and they made us fight for those four points," Wildung said of the Lakers' weekend sweep.

With the victory, Mercyhurst moved to 7-0-2 in its last nine contests. That marks the program's longest unbeaten streak since 2002 when the Lakers went 12-0-1 from Jan. 12 until Feb. 22. The nine-game unbeaten streak ties for the fifth-longest unbeaten stretch in program history -- and is the third-longest during Mercyhurst's Division I era.

Meanwhile, Mercyhurst head coach Rick Gotkin moved into a tie for 21st all-time with his 540th collegiate win. Gotkin (540-397-88) is now tied with Don Brose (540-363-79), who coached four seasons at Concordia (Minn.) and then 30 seasons at Minnesota State-Mankato, although MSU was known as Mankato State for the first 29 years.

The Lakers will return to action on Monday when the Rochester Institute of Technology visits the MIC for a 7:05 p.m. faceoff.
