ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst men's basketball team opened its season with a 95-36 non-conference win over Fredonia on Friday at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
Jason Massey scored 17 points, leading a quintet of Laker scorers in double-figures.
Trystan Pratapas added 16 points while
Patrick Smith and
Nicholas Lang put in 13 apiece.
MiyKah McIntosh added 11 points.
Smith also had seven rebounds while
Derrick Ellis Jr. finished with six assists and four steals.
The Lakers (1-0) had a strong showing on offense in the first half, making 19 of 27 field goals (70.4 percent), including 10 of 14 from three-point land (71.4). They finished the game 30 of 51 (58.8) and 15 of 27 (55.6), respectively. Seven different players hit from beyond the arc.
Mercyhurst opened the game on a 13-0 run, getting five points from Smith and four from McIntosh in that stretch. They led the rest of the way.
Matt Perez was the leading scorer for the D-III Blue Devils. He had seven points.
The Lakers held Fredonia to a 14-for-56 showing from the field (25.0), including 4 of 20 from three (20.0).
Mercyhurst will return to action on Wednesday when it hosts Daemen at the MAC. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. Tickets are $6 for adults, $3 for non-Mercyhurst students and free for Mercyhurst students and children 6-and-under.
