Men's Hoops Holds On For Win Over Daemen

ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst men's basketball team held off Daemen for a 67-65 non-conference on Saturday at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.

Jason Massey scored 14 points while Nelson Maxwell and Patrick Smith chipped in with 12 and 11, respectively. Edvaldo Ferreira was the leading rebounder with 10 boards. Smith added six boards and Ellis dished six assists.

Mercyhurst (2-0) trailed by as many as six points in the first half. It led by as many as eight in the opening period, as well, before playing to a 28-28 halftime tie.

The Lakers' largest lead in the second half was 59-52 before the visiting Wildcats (2-1) went on a seven-point run to even the contest at 59-all.

Nicholas Lang then buried a 3-pointer to put Mercyhurst ahead, 62-59. Daemen pulled within one on three occasions after that before its desperation shot at the buzzer missed.

The Lakers finished 27 of 58 from the field (46.6 percent). It was a tale of two halves; they were 11 of 29 in the first (37.9) and 16 of 29 in the second (55.2). Mercyhurst outrebounded Daemen, 31-28.

Next Up: The Lakers will be in action next when they host Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday, Nov. 17, for a 3 p.m. start.

Tickets: $6 for adults, $3 for non-Mercyhurst students, free for Mercyhurst students, free for children 6-and-under.
