ERIE, Pa. –
Emma Nuutinen scored with five seconds left in overtime to record her first career hat trick and give the Mercyhurst women's ice hockey team a 5-4 win over Penn State during College Hockey America play on Saturday at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
Nuutinen also tallied an assist.
Maggie Knott recorded a goal and an assist while
Sarah Hine scored the other Laker goal.
Alexa Vasko had two assists while single assists were credited to
Vilma Tanskanen,
Molly Blasen,
Mary Katherine Gialames,
Michele Robillard and
Sarah McDonnell.
Knott got the scoring started with a power play goal at 16:09 of the first period. Nuutinen and Tanskanen picked up assists.
With 23 seconds left in the first period, Katie Rankin tied the game at 1-1 with a power play goal assisted by Loli Fidler and Natalie Heising.
During the second period Penn State took a 4-1 lead with two goals from Filder and one goal from Heising. Fidler's second goal was a power play goal. Kelsey Crow tallied two assists, while Katie McMillan and Heising added one each.
At 16:27 of the second period, Nuutinen scored a shorthanded goal with assists from Vasko and Blasen.
Two minutes and ten seconds later, Hine scored to bring the Lakers within one. Gialames and Robillard picked up assists.
During the third period, Nuutinen scored her second goal of the game to tied it at 4-4 and eventually send the game into overtime. The game tying goal was assisted by Vasko.
With five seconds left in overtime Nuutinen finished her hat trick and gave Mercyhurst a 5-4 victory.
McDonnell made 32 saves in net for Mercyhurst (5-5-0, 5-1-0) while Chantal Burke stopped 24 shots on net for Penn State (4-5-1, 0-2-0).
The Lakers were 1-for-4 on the power play while the Nittany Lions finished 2-for-3.
Mercyhurst is back in action on Nov. 3-4 when they travel to Lindenwood for a two-game weekend series. Puck drops at 7:30 p.m. EST on Friday and 1:30 p.m. EST on Saturday.
