Women's Ice Hockey Holds On For 2-1 Win Over Penn State

ERIE, Pa. – Emma Nuutinen and K.K. Thiessen scored as the Mercyhurst women's ice hockey team defeated Penn State 2-1 during College Hockey America play on Friday at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.

Nuutinen also had an assist while Emily Pinto picked up the Lakers other assist.

After a scoreless first period, Nuutinen got the Lakers on the board at 2:48 of the second period. After a failed Penn State clear, Nuutinen picked up the puck off the boards, skated it and sent it passed Nittany Lion goaltender Jenna Brenneman.

During the third period, Thiessen scored her first goal of the season to put the Lakers up 2-0. Nuutinen passed the puck to Pinto who wrapped it around the net. The puck was rebounded out to Thiessen who sent a rocket to the back of the net.

Later in the third period, Brooke Madsen scored to bring the Nittany Lions within one. Kelsey Crow and Loli Filder added assists.

With five seconds left in the third period, Penn State scored what would have been a tying goal but it was waved off due to off sides.

Winning goaltender Sarah McDonnell made 24 saves in net for Mercyhurst (4-5-0, 4-1-0 CHA) while Brenneman made 31 saves for Penn State (4-4-1, 0-1-0 CHA).

Both teams were 0-for-4 on the power play.

The two teams are back in action Saturday at 3 p.m. Tickets will be available 90 minutes before puck drop and may be purchased with cash only at the door. They are $10 per adult and $5 for student/seniors. MU students get free admission.
