Women's Basketball Surges Past Clarion

ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's basketball team defeated Clarion 79-62 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action on Monday in the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
 
Emilee Norris recorded her first double-double of the season as she led the Lakers with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Norris also led blocks for Mercyhurst with four.

Amber Renz added 16 points while Lauren Lapertosa contributed 11 points. Emily Shopene added eight rebounds and six assists.
 
Amesha Harden-Pullium led Clarion (7-8, 2-7) with 26 points. Tracy Wiehe was the only other Golden Eagle to break into double-digit scoring with 13 points.
 
Mercyhurst grabbed the lead early on and never trail from a good three-pointer from Maria Lapertosa. The Lakers extended their lead to 22 points when they led 76-54 with three minutes remaining in the game.
 
The Lakers allowed Clarion to knot the action one time during the contest at 40-40 with 4:18 left to play in the third. This is as close as the Golden Eagles would come to taking the lead.
 
Mercyhurst capitalized on the remaining time, breaking the 40-40 deadock with a 14-1 run. Vivian Allison headed this rallywith five points, Renz added two lay-ups, Stephanie Petery knocked back a three and Norris contributed a basket.
 
In the fourth quarter, the Lakers ran out to their 22-point lead off of the five different scorers.
 
The Lakers held an edge at the glass, leading rebounds 46-28. Mercyhurst also led bench points, earning 42 points from nonstarters compared to the 12 points earned by Clarion's nonstarter players.
 
The Lakers will play again next when they host Seton Hill at 5:30 pm in PSAC action on Wednesday.
