ERIE, Pa. --
Malcolm Walters led Mercyhurst with 24 points and seven rebounds as the Lakers' men's basketball team rolled to a 91-62 victory over Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference opponent Clarion on Monday at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. The Lakers dominated the second half, outscoring the visiting Golden Eagles 53-28.
Walters finished 9 of 13 from the field, including 6 of 9 from three-point territory. He was the leading rebounder for both teams as the Lakers held a 44-19 advantage on the glass.
Dajuan Dent added 12 points and five rebounds off the bench while
Derrick Ellis Jr. dished nine assists for the Lakers (6-6, 3-5), who ended a five-game skid in PSAC play.
Clarion's Cameron Grumley led all scorers with 30 points. He also had six rebounds while teammates Brandon Williams and Mason Mraz put in 11 points apiece.
Mercyhurst broke a 9-all tie with 10 consecutive points, including five by
Edvaldo Ferreira. That gave Mercyhurst the lead for good.
The Eagles (3-12, 0-9) closed the Mercyhurst lead to 38-34 at halftime before the Lakers pulled away in the second half.
Clarion closed within two points early in the second half, but another 10-0 streak by the host helped Mercyhurst build a comfortable lead it held the rest of the way.
The Lakers finished 36 of 66 from the field (54.5 percent), including 9 of 23 from three-point land (39.1) while Clarion was 20 of 48 (41.7) and 5 of 18 (27.8), respectively. In the decisive second half, Mercyhurst was 22 of 32 (68.8) and 5 of 13 (38.5) while CU was 7 of 21 (33.3) and 1 of 7 (14.3).
Mercyhurst will return to action with another home game on Wednesday when Seton Hill visits the MAC for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
