ERIE, Pa. --
Patrick Smith recorded his fifth double-double of the season, compiling 12 points and 11 rebounds, as the Mercyhurst men's basketball team earned a 69-63 victory over Seton Hill during Wednesday's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference contest at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
Smith was one of four Lakers to score in double-figures.
Lorenzo Collier added 13 points,
Derrick Ellis Jr. had 12 points and three steals, and
Malcolm Walters totaled 11 points, five assists and three steals.
The Lakers (7-6, 4-5) took the lead for good in the second half when Stephen Spurlock Jr. buried a pair of free throws. A Seton Hill foul and Mercyhurst injury led to the Griffin coaching staff having to choose MU's free-throw shooter. They picked Spurlock, who made the visitors pay, and Mercyhurst held on from there.
Spurlock made two free throws, starting the beginning of an 8-0 Mercyhurst run midway through the second half. Collier, Ellis and Walters followed with individual baskets as the Lakers build a 53-46 lead. The Griffins pulled within three points once after that, but that was as close as they got.
Mercyhurst had taken the game's first lead as four different scorers helped the Lakers score the game's first nine points. Seton Hill eventually pulled even at at 18-all before taking a 21-20 lead on a three-pointer by Anthony Karabatsos. Mercyhurst then pushed back, going into halftime with a 35-29 advantage.
During the second half, the Griffins chipped away before going up 43-41 on a Karabatsos layup. Ellis and
Zach McIntire reponded with baskets, putting MU back in the lead before Matt Kline hit a three-pointer to give Seton Hill its final lead at 46-45. On the very next possession, Spurlock made the go-ahead freebies.
Seton Hill's Trevor Blondin led all scorers with 26 points while Spencer Casson and Nathan Davis grabbed six rebounds apiece. Daivs also had five steals and four assists.
Mercyhurst outrebounded SHU, 34-25, and finished 26 of 52 from the field (50.0 percent), including 4 of 9 from three-point territory (44.4). The Lakers struggled from the line, going 13 of 23 (56.5). SHU was 18 of 44 (40.9), 9 of 21 (42.9) and 18 of 22 (81.8), respectively.
The Lakers will return to action on Saturday with a 3 p.m. contest at PSAC foe Pittsburgh-Johnstown.
