WEST POINT, N.Y. --
Jack Riley recorded a goal and an assist as the Mercyhurst men's ice hockey team tied Army West Point, 2-2 on Friday, in front of 2,165 spectators at Tate Rink.
"It's always fun to play against my dad and to play here in the rink that I grew up in," said
Jack Riley. "I guess we're both going home satisfied tonight with a tie, but hopefully we can get on top of the win for tomorrow night."
Derek Barach also scored for Mercyhurst (12-10-4, 9-7-4).
Patrick Piacentini,
Les Lancaster and
Bryan Sienerth each had one assist.
Blake Box and Michael Wilson scored for Army (10-10-5, 7-7-5).
Halfway through the first, Blake sent a rocket over
Brandon Wildung's shoulder to put Army put 1-0. Zach Evancho and Brendan Soucie had assists.
Three minutes and thirty-two seconds later, the Lakers went on the power play and capitalized on it with a goal from
Jack Riley. Piacentini passed the puck back to Lancaster, who was on the blue line and took a shot, that left a rebound for
Jack Riley to bury top shelf.
During the second period, Mercyhurst killed off an early penalty and, shortly after, skated toward the Army net on a 3-on-1 rush.
Jack Riley chipped the puck up the ice to Sienerth, who carried it over the blue line, skated it to the net and passed it across the ice to Barach, who sent home the one-timer.
During the third period, Wilson scored a shorthanded goal for Army to tie the game back up at 2-2. The tying goal ultimately caused overtime and the game ended at 2-2.
"I thought it was a good college hockey game. It was an exciting college hockey game and maybe a tie tonight was a fitting outcome for both teams," said head coach
Rick Gotkin. "We'll take our one point and move onto tomorrow."
The Lakers went 1-for-3 on the power play while the Black Knights were 0-for-3.
Wildung made 26 saves in net for Mercyhurst and Jared Dempsey stopped 22 shots for Army.
Both teams are back in action Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
