WEST POINT, N.Y. --
Jack Riley scored three goals and tallied an assist while brother
Brendan Riley also scored to aid the Mercyhurst men's ice hockey team in its 6-1 win over Army West Point on Saturday night in front of a sold-out crowd.
Jack Riley's hat trick is the first Laker hat trick since Jan. 11, 2014, when Chris Bodo scored three times against Holy Cross.
Derek Barach and Tommaso Bucci scored the Lakers' other goals. Barach, Zach Todd and Bryan Sienerth each had two assists while Jeremy Wu, Les Lancaster, Quinn Wichers, Josh Lammon and Jonathan Charbonneau had one assist for Mercyhurst (13-10-4, 10-7-4).
Zack Evancho had the lone goal for Army (10-11-5, 7-8-5).
Fifty seconds into the first period, Brendan Riley scored his third goal of the season and first against his father, Army head coach Brian Riley, to give Mercyhurst an early lead. Brendan Riley skated the puck into the Black Knights zone and shot it through traffic and behind Army goaltender Jared Dempsey. Wu and Todd had assists.
"It was a pretty special experience to be able to come back here, play, get a goal on my first shift and Jack to get a hat trick. I don't think we could've scripted it any better," said Brendan Riley. "This is something that we will carry with us for the rest of our lives."
Three and a half minutes later, on the power play, Jack Riley scored his 12th goal of the season and first of the night to put the Lakers up 2-0. Barach passed the puck to Lancaster, who took a shot from the blue line that was rebounded toward Jack Riley, who then snuck the puck behind Dempsey.
Later in the first period, Evancho brought the Black Knights within one with assists from Dalton MacAfee and Brendan Soucie.
One minute and three seconds into the second period, Jack Riley scored his second goal of the night and third of the weekend to extend the Lakers' lead to 3-1. Wichers chipped the puck into the Black Knights' zone, where Sienerth slid it to Barach, who skated in behind the net and back handed it to Jack Riley who sent home the back hander.
With 1:31 left in the second, Jack Riley completed his hat trick to put Mercyhurst up, 4-1. Todd passed the puck up to Jack Riley, who found an opening in the Black Knights' defense to finish the hat trick. Wichers also had an assist.
"(It was) definitely a special moment," said Jack Riley. "Like I said yesterday, anytime I can come here and play on the rink that I learned how to skate in, it's a pretty amazing experience. To have help from my teammates and look over and see my dad smiling, means a lot. We're just doing the right things right now and we gotta keep it up."
During the third period, Barach recorded his 11th goal of the season to make it 5-1. Sienerth passed the puck up to Jack, who carried it over the blue line and passed it across to Barach who one timed it to the back of the net.
Late in the third period, Bucci scored his second goal of the season to end the game in a 6-1 victory for Mercyhurst. Lammon chipped the puck up to Bucci, who slid it to Charbonneau, who then took a shot and Bucci deflected it top shelf.
Mercyhurst is now unbeaten in its last seven games, going 5-0-2 in the stretch. The last time the Lakers held a seven game unbeaten streak was during the 2015-16 season when they went 4-0-3 in their last seven games of the regular season.
The Lakers finished 1-for-7 on the power play while the Black Knights were 0-for-3.
Brandon Wildung stopped 28 out of 29 shots on net for Mercyhurst. Cole Bruns stopped 16 out of 19 shots for Army in a relief effort to Dempsey who made six saves.
The Lakers will get a week off before returning to action Feb. 9-10 when they host Holy Cross at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
"As a Dad, it's obviously a proud moment to see (the Riley brothers) out on the ice. We knew coming into the weekend that it was going to be a battle. (Mercyhurst has) been on a roll and you gotta give them a lot of credit," said Army coach Brian Riley.
