Men's Ice Hockey Draws With AIC 4-4

ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst men's hockey team tied American International College 4-4, on Saturday at the Mercyhurst Ice Center in front of 1,245 fans.

With six Mercyhurst skaters on the ice, Bryan Sienerth scored with 51 seconds left in the third period to tie the contest and ultimately force overtime.

Michael Verboom, Derek Barach and Joseph Duszak each scored one goal for the Lakers. Brendan Riley had two assists while Barach, Sienerth, Jack Riley, Jeremy Wu and Zach Todd had one assist each for Mercyhurst (12-10-3, 9-7-3).

Blake Christensen, Joel Kocur, Johno May and Janis Jaks recorded goals for AIC (9-14-3, 8-10-3).

During the first period, Verboom started off the scoring with his first goal of the season. He deflected a shot from the point by Wu. Brendan Riley was also credited with an assist.

AIC tied the game during a 5-on-3 power play. Christensen provided the goal, receiving assists from Brendan Kapcheck and Janis Jaks. That began a stretch of three straight goals for American International.

Halfway through the first, Kocur scored for the Yellow Jackets with assists from Darius Davidson and Nicolas Luka. During the second period, May scored to extend the Yellow Jackets lead to two goals. Ryan Polin and Jared Pike had assists.

Mercyhurst eventually answered with a goal near the end of the second and another goal shortly after the start of the third.

With 24 seconds left in the second, Barach put home his ninth goal of the season. He got an assist from Sienerth.

Then, 62 seconds into the third, Duszak tied the contest at 3-all with his fifth goal of the season. The Lakers charged hard into the zone as Brendan Riley dished a pass to Todd, who slid the saucer to Duszak, who skated in from the left point to bury the puck into a wide-open net.

Jaks scored a little over halfway through the third period to give AIC the lead back. Luka tallied an assist.

That set the stage for Sienerth's tying goal, which was assisted by Jack Riley and Barach. Barach wristed a shot toward the net and the puck glanced off Jack Riley. Sienerth then buried the loose puck with a backhand.

Brandon Wildung made 35 saves for Mercyhurst. Stefano Durante stopped 30 shots on net for AIC.

The Lakers finished 0-for-4 on the power play while the Yellow Jackets were 1-for-5.

The Lakers will be back in action Jan. 26-27 at Army West Point.
