Collier Sparks Men's Basketball In Win Over Cal (Pa.)

ERIE, Pa. -- Leading scorer Lorenzo Collier scored all 20 of his points in the second half to lead the Mercyhurst men's basketball team to a 67-47 victory against California (Pa.) during Saturday's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference matchup at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.

Malcolm Walters added 15 points and Derrick Ellis Jr.  put in 10 for Mercyhurst (8-8, 5-8). Leading rebounder Patrick Smith added 13 rebounds while Edvaldo Ferreira and Dontae Williams grabbed seven boards each. Williams also had three blocks.

For visiting California (8-11,  4-8), Isaiah Lewis led the way with 17 points while Robel Teckle and Jahmere Howze grabbed 11 and eight rebounds, respectively.

The teams battled through a defensive struggle in the first half as Mercyhurst took a 19-17 lead into halftime before exploding for 48 points in the second.

The Lakers broke a 21-21 tie with 18 consecutive points. Ellis scored six points for Mercyhurst -- two layups and two free throws -- before Collier buried a pair of three-pointers and then made a layup with 14:10, pushing the MU advantage to 39-21. From there, Mercyhurst held its lead in double-figures.

Despite shooting 27 of 71 for the game (38.0 percent), the Lakers were 19 of 39 in the second half (48.7). They went 0-for-10 from three-point territory in the opening half before making 6 of 13 in the second (46.2). Cal was 18 of 56 from the field for the game (32.1) and 3 of 19 from three-point land (15.8).

The Lakers held a 47-40 rebound advantage.

Mercyhurst will return to action on Wednesday when it hosts Edinboro for a 7:30 p.m PSAC tip-off.
