ERIE, Pa. --
Malcolm Walters buried the go-ahead three-pointer with 13.2 seconds left and then the Mercyhurst men's basketball team held on for an 80-79 victory over Edinboro during Wednesday's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
Walters finished with 17 points while the Lakers' leading scorer,
Lorenzo Collier, ended with 22.
Patrick Smith added 11 points,
Edvaldo Ferreira grabbed eight rebounds and
Derrick Ellis Jr. dished eight assists for Mercyhurst (9-8, 5-7), which claimed its second straight win.
Keshawn Liggins was the top performer for Edinboro (11-7, 8-6), totaling 24 points, 14 rebounds and five assists. Jaymon Mason, Trey Staunch and Anthony Coleman had 15, 14 and 12 points, respectively.
MU led by as many as 10 points in the first half and held a 42-34 advantage at intermission. Collier led the way in the opening half with 14 points.
The Lakers remained ahead until the Fighting Scots tied the contest on a Liggins three-pointer with 45 seconds left. The Lakers answered with Walters' trey. With a chance to tie, Edinboro failed to score on its next possession.
Ellis made 1 of 2 free throws with 2.3 seconds remaining to extend the MU lead to four points before Liggins hit a three at the buzzer as time expired.
Mercyhurst finished 30 of 54 from the field (55.6 percent), including 10 of 16 from three-point territory (62.5). EUP was 25 of 56 (44.6) and 12 of 28 (42.9), respectively. The Lakers were strong in the first half, going 16 of 24 from the field. They started the game 10 of 13.
In the rebound department, Mercyhurst outperformed Edinboro, 31-28.
The Lakers will return to action on Saturday with a 3 p.m. game against Indiana (Pa.).
