Lakers Earn Weekend Sweep and CHA's Top Spot With Shutout Win

ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's ice hockey team scored twice on the power play and twice at even strength and goaltender Sarah McDonnell recorded her first shutout of the season in Mercyhurst's 4-0 win over RIT Saturday afternoon at Mercyhurst Ice Center.

Following a trend from yesterday's win, the Lakers had four different players score a goal in Saturday's win. Brooke Hartwick (8), Vilma Tanskanen (8), Maggie Knott (8), and Samantha Fieseler (3) tallied scores for the Lakers.

Mercyhurst (10-12-2, 7-2-1) was outshot 14-4 by RIT (4-18-3, 1-9-0) in the opening period, but the Lakers took advantage of its only power play in the period. Hartwick netted her third power-play marker of the season with assists from Summer-Rae Dobson and Knott at 16:17.

The Lakers added on in the second period when Tanskanen found open ice in the RIT-zone to score at the 6:06 mark. Sarah Hine and Molly Blasen had helpers on the play.

Knott extended the Laker lead to three with her third power-play goal of the season at 7:23 in the third. Emma Nuutinen earned the first assist on a backdoor pass. Sam Isbell recorded the secondary assist.

With 10.5 seconds remaining, Fieseler scored to bring the final score to 4-0. Knott added another assist to post her second-straight three-point game. Michele Robillard also picked up a point on the play.

McDonnell stopped all 25 RIT shots for the game to earn her seventh-career shutout and improve to 5-6-2 this season. Her last shutout came against RIT back on Feb. 25, 2017.

With the win, Mercyhurst now has 15 points in the College Hockey America (CHA) standings, putting them in sole possession of first place. The Lakers will defend home ice next weekend when they host Lindenwood Jan. 19-20. Friday's start will be at 3 p.m. followed by a 2 p.m. puck drop on Saturday.
