ELKINS, W.V. – The 17
th ranked Mercyhurst men's soccer team conquered its first road test of the season with a 2-0 victory over Davis & Elkins Saturday evening. The Lakers have won two-straight non-conference games.
Mercyhurst (2-1-0) controlled possession for much of the first half and held a slight shot advantage over the Senators (1-1-1) 7-6, including three shots on goal to D&E's 2. Mercyhurst's possession finally paid off when D&E was penalized in their box and set of the Lakers' first goal of the game.
Christopher Makengo converted the penalty kick for his first goal of the season and to put Mercyhurst ahead 1-0 in the 34
th minute.
In the second half, the Lakers doubled their lead in the 79
th minute.
Connor Wilkinson crossed a free kick in to the box which was redirected into the goal by
Fjodor van Kippersluis for his third goal of the season. The assist was Wilkinson's second of the season.
D&E ended up with the total edge in shots for the game 13-11 but the Lakers had five shots on target to the Senators' two.
Mercyhurst begins play in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference in its next game Wednesday, September 13, at Seton Hill. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
