Men's Soccer Picks Up Big Road Win To Begin PSAC Play

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The 14th-ranked Mercyhurst men's soccer team earned its first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) victory of the season with an impressive 3-2 road win over Seton Hill Wednesday afternoon.

Mercyhurst got off to a solid start by netting the first goal of the game just over two minutes in. Off a free kick, Andrew Bennett centered to Michael Blancato to score his first of the season and put the Lakers up 1-0.

Seton Hill responded in the 17th minute to tie the game. Alex Dyson netted his second of the season to tie the game at one.

Mercyhurst retook the lead in the 37th minutes thanks to Christopher Makengo. He and Alex Garcia Piles set up a nice give-and-go to leave Makengo one-on-one with the keeper. He finished the play for his second goal of the season to give the Lakers a 2-1 lead entering the half.

In the second half, the Lakers continued a reoccurring season theme after Fjodor van Kippersluis entered the game in the 64th minute. van Kippersluis scored his fourth goal of the season as a substitute when he beat his defender one-on-one in the box and pocketed his shot into the side netting for a Lakers' insurance goal in the 77th minute.

The insurance goal proved important as Seton Hill had a flurry of chances down the stretch, including one chance that resulted in a Griffins' goal. Joeffe Bradley converted on a Laker turnover to make the score 3-2 in the 87th minute, but Mercyhurst held on for its first conference victory of the season.

Mercyhurst totaled 21 shots, including 11 shots on goal compared to Seton Hill's 14 shots with six on target. Makengo led all players with seven shot attempts. van Kippersluis had three attempts in just 27 minutes played.

The Lakers return home this weekend to host West Chester Saturday, Sept. 16 beginning at 1 p.m.
