Sarr's OT Winner Gives Lakers First Win of Season

ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst men's soccer team earned its first victory of the season on Hady Sarr's overtime goal to beat Notre Dame College 2-1 Sunday afternoon at Mercyhurst soccer field.

The Lakers (1-1) have now beaten the Falcons (1-1) in their last two matchups dating back to last season and four times at of the last five meetings dating back to the start of the 2014 season.

Mercyhurst started the game controlling most of the possession and the majority of scoring chances, but it was actually NDC who netted the first goal. After a Falcon forward was taken down in the penalty area, Leonardo Paiva converted his penalty kick try to put the Falcons ahead in the 38th minute. The goal was Paiva's 22nd straight game with a goal dating back to last season.

NDC had back-to-back scoring opportunities shortly after Paiva's goal but Martin Jarc made two sprawling saves to keep the score within one. The Lakers' forwards responded by converting on a corner kick chance in the 42nd minute. Connor Wilkinson's corner was directed towards net by Sarr and redirected in by Fjodor van Kippersluis for his second goal in as many games.

After a tightly contested second half where the scoring chances were close to even between both teams, Sarr ended up the hero in the overtime period as the Lakers converted on another corner kick try. This time, van Kippersluis took the corner and Sarr poked it past the Falcons' keeper for his first goal as a Laker.

Six yellow cards were handed out for the game, including four at Mercyhurst's expense. Mercyhurst outshot NDC 20-7 for the game but only managed seven shots on target. NDC had five shots on goal.

Mercyhurst faces its first road test of the season in its next game on Saturday, September 9, when they visit Davis & Elkins at 7 p.m.
