Mercyhurst Volleyball Drops Pair Of Games In Second Day Of Hall Of Fame City Challenge

CANTON, Ohio – The Mercyhurst volleyball team dropped a pair of matches to wrap up the Hall of Fame City held at Malone University. Mercyhurst lost their first match to the host team in three sets, while falling in four sets to West Alabama. The losses Individual match recaps below.

Mercyhurst will take the court again next Friday in the Mercyhurst/Gannon Tournament against Findlay University at 5:05 p.m. and Saint Michael's College at 7:05 p.m. in the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. 
 
Malone 3, Mercyhurst 0
The Lakers (0-4) fell to the Pioneers, 25-18, 25-21, 25-18.
 
Mercyhurst was led by Shelby Chesko and Alyssa Zirnheld who had nine and eight kills, respectively. Freshman libero Hannah Vuylsteke led the Lakers in digs with nine. Abby Rose led assists for the Lakers with 12 while Makayla Mollé added another 11.
 
Faith Lau, and Brooklyn Sullivan led Malone's offense, posting 11 and 10 kills, respectively.

 
West Alabama 3, Mercyhurst 1

Mercyhurst claimed the first set, 25-20, but was unable to stop a three-set comeback from Malone, who outscored the Lakers 26-24, 25-15, 25-17 in the last three sets.

Mercyhurst was able to push past West Alabama, breaking out of a 14-14 deadlock to claim the first set. During the second set, Mercyhurst marched back being down 16-11 to a 18-18 tie and entered a back and forth in which West Alabama came out the victor. West Alabama pulled away in the final two sets.
 
Chesko led the Laker offense with 11 kills. Kling and Leah Kern were also contributors with seven and six kills, respectively. Vuylsteke led the Lakers in digs with 13 while Katie Baird added 11. Molle led assists during the second match with 18 while Rose added 14.
 
Briana Sandifer, Taylin McCarver, and Jaime Lancellot all broke into the double-digits for West Alabama with 15, 12 and 10 kills respectively.
