GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Mercyhurst field hockey team lost a heartbreaking 3-2 game against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference competitor Seton Hill. The Lakers would go out to take an early 2-0 lead during the first 12 minutes of play. Mercyhurst was unable to hold off the Griffins who scored three unanswered goals during the second half, with the winning goal coming with 47 seconds left in regulation.
Nicolette Tomani and
Clare Ahern scored back to back goals in under a minute in the first 12 minutes of play. At the 11 minute mark Tomani scored off of a loose ball in front of the net, she was assisted by Ahern. Ahern, unassisted, scored off of a strong shot from the top of the box just 50 seconds later.
Molly Childress alone scored the two goals to knot the match as 2-2, her first goal coming off of a corner, and her second off of a penalty shot. Maia Cheeks scored the game winning goal with only 47 seconds left in regulation, she was assisted by Moly Childress.
Victoria Triaga was the losing goalie for the Lakers she posted four saves but allowed three goals during the contest. Jane Eberhardt was the winning goalie allowing two goals and posting 13 saves for the Griffins.
Ahern led the Lakers in shots having all six of hers being on goal, while Tomani had all four of her shots on goal.
Leah Rogers and
Christina Mertz also added two shots on goal apiece.
The Lakers held a 20 to 11 edge over the Griffins in the shot category. Mercyhurst also had the advantage in corners posting 12 to Seton Hill's nine.
The Mercyhurst field hockey team will return to action next at home on Saturday against Bloomsburg, at 1 pm.
