Latona's Walk-Off Hit Completes Weekend Sweep

ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst baseball team completed its four-game sweep of Clarion with two wins on Saturday, April 15 at Mercyhurst University Baseball Field. The Lakers (27-2, 15-1) crushed Clarion 15-4 in game one followed by a walk-off 2-1 win in the second game. Mercyhurst now holds a 14-game win streak.

Recaps for both games are below.

Game 1: Clarion 4, Mercyhurst 15
Mercyhurst's lineup scored double-digit runs for the 11th time this season in game one. The Lakers scored seven runs to begin the game without recording an out and finished the first inning ahead 8-0.

Three Lakers hit home runs in the first frame. Jimmy Latona led off the game with a solo shot. Matthew Schneider and Sabatino DiNardo III hit back-to-back jacks to chase Clarion starter Jeremy Frazier from the game after facing seven batters.

Chris Gonzalez roped four singles in four at bats and drove in two runs while scoring two himself.  Clean-up hitter Drew Delsignore added four more RBI on 2-of-3 hitting.

A common theme this season, the Lakers offense provided more than enough run support for their starting pitcher. Chris Vallimont was dominant over 5.2 innings, striking out 14 batters and allowing just four hits in his sixth win of the season (6-1).

Game 2: Clarion 1, Merychurst 2
After winning in a rout in game one, it took a walk-off base hit by Latona for Mercyhrust to complete the weekend sweep in the day's second game.

Clarion scored its only run in the first inning off Lakers' starter Vincenzo Lucente. After that, Lucente cruised his way to a complete game victory (3-0) with just two hits allowed and nine strikeouts.

Golden Eagles' starter Kyler Mellott held the Lakers scoreless through 3.2 innings until DiNardo broke the shutout with a laser-shot homer over the center field fence. His second solo round tripper of the day tied the game at one.

The Lakers threatened in the sixth inning but failed to get a run across with two men left on base. In the bottom of the seventh, Dan Popio reached first base and was sacrificed to second on a bunt by Jimmy Standohar. That set the stage for Latona's game-winning single to center field scoring Popio from second.

Mercyhurst plays out-of-conference opponent Lake Erie College in its next game on Wednesday, April 19. The nine-inning game starts at 2 p.m.
