Baseball Completes Comeback Win Against Lake Erie

ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst baseball team came back from a three-run deficit to beat Lake Erie 8-7 at Mercyhurst University on Wednesday, April 19. The win marked the 15th straight victory for the Lakers (28-2) and also improved the Lakers' non-conference record to 13-1 on the season.

Lake Erie sprung out in front in the first inning thanks to a grand slam by Nigel Williams. Mercyhurst rebounded with four runs in the first and second innings, which included solo home runs from Drew Delsignore and Sabatino DiNardo III and two runs batted in by Chris Gonzalez.

The Storm retook the lead in top of the fourth with three runs to make the score 7-4. In the fourth, the Mercyhurst bullpen took over for starter Connor Ryan who managed to throw three-plus innings, allowing five earned runs with five strikeouts.

The Lakers ended up tying the game in the bottom of the sixth inning thanks to another RBI-hit from Gonzalez followed by a two-run bomb by Cameron Balego.

Gonzalez finished the game 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI. Balego's home run was his 11th of the season, a team-high for Mercyhurst.

Mercyhurst earned its first lead of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning on Jimmy Latona's sacrifice fly to score Jared Kapturasky.

Lakers' pitchers Drew Borowski, Jim Solano, Jamie Lauria, and Andrew Ciolli managed to complete six innings, allowing six hits and just one unearned run. The bullpen also managed to strike out eight batters.

Lauria earned his second win of the season for his work in the seventh and eighth innings. Ciolli picked up his third save of the year.

Mercyhurst takes on Gannon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference battle this weekend. The four-game series starts with a doubleheader on Friday, April 21 at Mercyhurst starting at 1 p.m.
