Lamovec Throws A Gem As Lakers Split With Seton Hill

ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst baseball team split its first doubleheader against Seton Hill on Saturday, April 1st. The Lakers (14-2) lost 2-0 in game one before bouncing back to shut out the Griffins (15-8) 4-0 in game two.

The Lakers are now 5-1 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play entering tomorrow's two-game set in Greensburg, Pa. Recaps to both of Saturday's games are listed below.

Game 1: Seton Hill 2, Mercyhurst 0
The Lakers were shut out for the first time this season in game one. The loss was their first since Feb. 19 and it was their first blemish in conference action this season.

Mercyhurst's first and only hit of the game was a leadoff double by Jimmy Latona in the first inning. The Lakers struggled to make contact against Seton Hill starting pitcher Perry DellaValle, who completed the shutout with 14 strikeouts on 124 total pitches.

Lakers' starting pitcher Matthew Minnick (3-1) cruised through his first four innings but ran into a rough patch in the top of the fifth. The Griffins managed to score two runs on four singles and forced Minnick to throw 38 pitches in the frame.

Minnick's day ended after five innings with two earned runs and five hits allowed and eight strikeouts.

Game 2: Seton Hill 0, Mercyhurst 4
The day's second game belonged to Laker right-hander Russell Lamovec as he led the Lakers in a bounce-back win to even the weekend series.

Lamovec (4-0) sported a devastating breaking ball in his complete game outing that helped him strike out 12. He also did not walk a batter and allowed just four singles.

The Lakers lineup scored three runs in the first inning to give Lamovec all the run support he needed. Drew Delsignore had a two-RBI single in the first and Daniel Elliott drove in another run on a groundout.

In the fourth inning, Dan Popio added one more run on an RBI-double to left field to score Matthew Schneider.

The Lakers travel to Greensburg tomorrow to conclude their four-game series against Seton Hill. The doubleheader is set to begin at 1 p.m.
