SPARKS, Md. -- The fourth-ranked Mercyhurst men's lacrosse team suffered an 8-7 overtime loss to eighth-ranked Mount Olive in non-conference action on Saturday at the US Lacrosse headquarters. Mount Olive's Jacob Ball ended the contest 3:27 into the first overtime period.
James Crowe led the Lakers with two goals and one assist while
Keyan McQueen contributed two goals. Single goals were scored by
Sam Crusha,
Derek Richards and
Michael Poe.
Also for Mercyhurst (2-1),
Colin Greenway had two assists.
Kurtis Woodland and
Oran Horn dished one assist each.
Defensively, the Lakers were led by
Greg Weyl, who had three groundballs and two caused turnovers. In goal,
Matt Wells totaled eight saves.
The Lakers built a 5-1 lead in the first half before Mount Olive mounted a gradual comeback, finally tying the game at 6-all in the fourth quarter.
A goal by Crowe, with an assist from Woodland, gave the Lakers a 7-6 advantage with 1:13 remaining in the contest before UMO's Jesse Mitchell scored an equalizer with 10 seconds remaining on the clock. That set the stage for the Ball winner in OT.
Thatcher Clark was the leading point-getter for Mount Olive, compiling two goals and two assists. Ball had two goals in support of goalie Will Urban, who had 15 saves.
Mercyhurst will return to action on Wednesday when it plays its home opener against Saint Rose. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
