Keyan McQueen had a six-point game and
Derek Richards tallied four goals as the eighth-ranked Mercyhurst men's lacrosse team claimed an 11-6 non-conference victory over Wheeling Jesuit on Sunday at Tullio Field.
McQueen finished with two goals and four assists for the Lakers (4-1), who outscored the visiting Cardinals 8-1 in the second half. McQueen assisted three of Richards' four scores.
Kurtis Woodland added two goals and one assist for Mercyhurst.
Colin Greenway had one goal and one assist while
Jarrett Cook and
John Plaskey recorded single goals.
Winning goaltender
Matt Wells totaled eight saves.
Greg Weyl was strong on defense with four caused turnovers and three groundballs while
Joe Cerio finished 13-for-16 in the faceoff circle with eight GBs.
WJU took a 4-1 first-half lead before Mercyhurst chipped away at the deficit. Trailing 6-4 in the second half, the Lakers closed the game with a 7-0 run, including three goals by Richards and two from McQueen.
Mike Stillings had two goals for the Cardinals (1-5) and goalie Jake Lilly finished with 12 stops.
The Lakers will be in action next on Saturday, Mar. 18, when they host a 1 p.m. game against Great Midwest Athletic Conference opponent Walsh.
