Box Score 4 SALEM, Va. -- The Mercyhurst softball team won three of four contests at the Salem VA Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Individual recaps are below.
Mercyhurst 5, #13 West Virginia Wesleyan 4
Jolene Teller delivered a go-ahead, two-run single as the Lakers upset the 13th-ranked Bobcats on Friday.
Mercyhurst had jumped ahead in the second inning on a three-run triple by
Rachel DiBartolomeo before West Virginia Wesleyan scored twice in the third and twice in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead.
That set the stage for Teller's heroics in the top half of the seventh.
Ellie Dougher scored twice for the Lakers in support of winning pitcher
Heather Nye, who recorded three strikeouts while going the distance.
Shepherd 4, Mercyhurst 2
A four-run first inning was all Shepherd needed for victory over the Lakers on Friday.
Cassandra Egelston helped the Lakers to a short-lived lead in the first, drawing a walk and stealing two bases before scoring on an error.
Then, Shepherd took a 4-1 lead and led the rest of the way.
Teller had an RBI single in the third for Mercyhurst.
Sarah Eschleman worked 4 1/3 innings of relief in the pitcher's circle, finishing with three strikeouts
Mercyhurst 11, Davis and Elkins 9 (8 inn.)
DiBartolomeo had two home runs, including a go-ahead bomb, as the Lakers won a wild affair over D&E on Saturday.
Mercyhurst scored eight runs in the fourth inning -- highlighted by a DiBartolomeo two-run dinger -- to grab an 8-1 advantage.
Davis and Elkins eventually answered with six runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to force extra innings.
In the top half of the eighth, DiBartolomeo delivered her three-run smash as the Lakers took the lead for good.
Nye was the winning pitcher in relief of starter
Anna Cochis. Eschleman got the save.
Mercyhurst 12, Salem International 2 (5 inn.)
The Lakers broke out the sticks in their second straight game to finish with a total of 23 runs on Saturday.
Two-hit games were recorded by DiBartolomeo, Teller, Dougher,
Emily Hair and
Emily Foy. DiBartolomeo had three RBI, Foy drove in two runs and Dougher scored three runs.
Nye was the winning pitcher, tallying two strikeouts in five innings.
